Raising kids in a toxic environment takes its toll on everyone involved. If you are exhausted and emotionally worn down, then your ability to help your kids is extremely limited. I know you desperately want to help them and probably feel guilty about taking any time for you. But please understand that you must work on your own healthiness first. At least get that started and be a few steps in front of your kids. You can not only lead the way for them but you will be stronger for them to lean on you.
Don’t feel guilty about taking time for you own healing. Take some steps everyday. Every single day do one thing that makes you stronger and more peaceful. Here are some suggestions: meditate, go for a walk in nature, visit with a friend, take a bubble bath, get a massage, do some gardening, read a fun book, exercise. Take time for you.
Your kids will see you making yourself a priority. That is a great lesson for them to learn! They will need to learn to take care of themselves. As they grow and age, they must make themselves a priority. No one in life is going to do everything for them. They must take care of themselves. Lead the way on this one! Let them learn by watching your example.
